[00:00]
Ever feel guilty for resting, like you're failing just by taking a break?
[00:05]
Let's flip the script on that today.
[00:10]
Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers
[00:13]
who've seen countless doctors with no results.
[00:18]
Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks
[00:20]
without endless medications or constant sacrifices.
[00:24]
Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme.
[00:25]
I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine,
[00:29]
even after suffering for up to 60 years.
[00:32]
My mission in life?
[00:34]
To bring this relief to a million people
[00:36]
using a unique blend of Eastern medicine and Western science.
[00:43]
In this episode, you will learn why your brain equates rest with failure,
[00:49]
the science-backed link between over-productivity and migraine flare-ups,
[00:55]
and how to turn rest into a power move
[00:57]
that accelerates your healing instead of slowing you down.
[01:01]
Stay with me until the end,
[01:03]
because we're going to uncover why your body is begging for rest,
[01:06]
even if your mind says, go, go, go,
[01:09]
and your healing journey depends on hearing that call.
[01:13]
Let me begin with a bit of honesty, and maybe a little humility too.
[01:19]
I am not great at resting.
[01:22]
I'm always on, always thinking, always creating.
[01:26]
I work on Migraine Heroes every single day,
[01:29]
not just because I have to, but because I choose to.
[01:33]
People sometimes say, oh, the day you sell Migraine Heroes,
[01:36]
and I realize they just don't get it.
[01:39]
For me, the joy isn't in the exit.
[01:41]
It's in the journey, the improvements,
[01:44]
the super hard cases solved, the family reunited together,
[01:48]
the minds sharpened free to live.
[01:50]
It is in the impact.
[01:52]
My work is my love made visible.
[01:55]
And yet today, I want to talk to you about something
[01:58]
I don't have all figured out,
[02:00]
something I know matters deeply, but still struggle with.
[02:06]
If I'm being real, I've never been one for a slow living.
[02:09]
But as I stepped into my 40s two years ago,
[02:13]
I know intellectually this is starting to be increasingly important.
[02:17]
If you want to age well, you simply need to rest.
[02:21]
So this episode isn't me preaching from the mountaintop.
[02:24]
It's me learning right alongside you.
[02:27]
And maybe by talking about rest, I'll start practicing it a little better too.
[02:33]
Let's start with a definition.
[02:35]
Productivity guilt.
[02:38]
Productivity guilt is the feeling of inadequacy or failure
[02:42]
when one is not actively working or being productive.
[02:46]
This phenomenon is deeply rooted in what psychologists called
[02:50]
internalized capitalism.
[02:53]
Oh dear, what a terrible term right there.
[02:56]
And yet it resonates so much.
[02:58]
The belief that our worth is tied to our output.
[03:02]
In a 2021 study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology,
[03:08]
Dr. Andrew Bennett highlighted how internalized productivity norms
[03:12]
have intensified during the remote work area.
[03:14]
So during COVID, blurring the lines between work and rest.
[03:19]
Participants reported feelings of shame
[03:21]
when engaging in non-work activities, even if they were medically necessary.
[03:27]
For migraine sufferers, this internal tension is especially harmful.
[03:32]
Chronic stress and sleep deprivation are top triggers
[03:35]
for neurological inflammation and migraine attacks.
[03:38]
A 2018 study in the Journal of Headache and Pain found that perceived stress
[03:44]
significantly increased migraine frequency and severity
[03:48]
even more than physical exertion or dietary triggers.
[03:52]
For most people, the answer lies in dopamine-driven reward systems.
[03:57]
In her book Dopamination, Dr. Anna Lembeck from Stanford University
[04:03]
explains how society has become addicted to the dopamine spikes
[04:07]
associated with achievement, reinforcing a dangerous cycle of overwork.
[04:13]
When we rest, our dopamine levels normalize,
[04:16]
which can feel like failure, but is in fact a necessary recalibration.
[04:22]
For you, listening to me today, the reason why you push through might be different.
[04:27]
Maybe you learned it young, how to push through the pain with a brave face,
[04:31]
because the world didn't pause when your head split open or your vision blurred.
[04:36]
Somewhere along the way, surviving meant pretending.
[04:40]
You kept showing up, nodding through the fog,
[04:43]
smiling when your body begged for stillness, and so rest became unfamiliar.
[04:49]
Not because you don't deserve it, but because you were never given the permission to need it.
[04:54]
You've mistaken resilience for silence, and silence for strength.
[05:00]
But what if the real strength is in listening?
[05:03]
What if the absence of rest isn't laziness,
[05:06]
but a long-held instinct to mask your pain so that the world wouldn't see it?
[05:11]
And what if now, for the first time, you could begin to unlearn that?
[05:15]
Rest, then, is not the enemy, it's the antidote.
[05:20]
In traditional Chinese medicine, the idea that rest is weakness would be completely fine.
[05:26]
In fact, yang cannot exist without yin.
[05:29]
Just as the sun cannot blaze without the night to cool it,
[05:32]
your strength cannot rise without moments of stillness to restore it.
[05:36]
If you live with migraines, you've likely been taught by culture,
[05:40]
by urgency, by survival to push through.
[05:43]
But in traditional Chinese medicine, that pushing is pure yang.
[05:47]
Action, fire, motion, and fire unchecked will burn you out.
[05:52]
To heal, you must also invite the yin, the quiet, the cooling, the unseen,
[05:58]
where true restoration lives.
[06:01]
Yin is the soft exhale that allows your nervous system to settle.
[06:05]
It's the permission to lie down, not because you're weak,
[06:08]
but because you're listening to the language of your body.
[06:11]
And that is strength in its most sacred form.
[06:14]
You are not lazy for needing rest, you are human.
[06:17]
In the rhythm of yin and yang, your rest is not just allowed, it's required.
[06:22]
In traditional Chinese medicine, chronic migraine is often the result of imbalances,
[06:26]
such as liver tissue stagnation or kidney yin deficiency.
[06:30]
Conditions worsen by overwork, lack of sleep, and emotional suppression.
[06:35]
Pushing through fatigue without recovery leads to empty heat symptoms,
[06:39]
anxiety, migraines, hormonal imbalances.
[06:42]
Rest is not just recovery, it's medicine.
[06:45]
Our Yuveda also teaches that rest, especially aligned with Sikhardan rhythms,
[06:49]
is a form of ogis, building, enhancing your vital immunity and mental clarity.
[06:56]
When we rest, we are not quitting, we are recalibrating.
[07:01]
And that shift in belief, that is where your healing begins.
[07:05]
So if rest feels foreign, let me offer three gentle ways to welcome it back into your life.
[07:12]
And I'm going to implement these myself.
[07:15]
Number one, micro-rest once a day.
[07:19]
Give yourself just three undisturbed minutes.
[07:22]
Close your eyes, elevate your legs, feel your breath,
[07:26]
say to your body, I see you, I hear you, you can let go now.
[07:31]
Number two, rest through your senses.
[07:34]
A soft blanket, a warm mug, a lavender scent.
[07:39]
Surround yourself with a few small objects, what the Norwegians called hige.
[07:44]
Let comfort lead you into calm.
[07:47]
Let your nervous system feel, I am safe here, I can suffer now.
[07:52]
And number three, go to bed like in the old days.
[07:57]
An hour before bed, dim the lights or light a candle.
[08:01]
Let your body feel the shift, let the light become the lullaby.
[08:06]
So maybe today you pick just one or all three of these.
[08:10]
Healing often begins when you do less, not more.
[08:13]
Rest is not a weakness, it's a returning.
[08:17]
And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom.
[08:22]
You are powerful, you are resilient, and you are no longer alone.
[08:27]
Keep rising, migraine hero.
