[00:00]
Ever woke up after 8 hours of sleep and still feel like your brain's running on dial-up?
[00:06]
Today we're diving into why rest isn't the same as recovery, and how true rest can
[00:12]
literally restore blood flow to your brain.
[00:18]
Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers who've seen countless doctors with
[00:26]
Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks without endless medications or constant sacrifices.
[00:31]
Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme, I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine, even
[00:38]
after suffering for up to 60 years.
[00:41]
My mission in life?
[00:42]
To bring this relief to a million people, using a unique blend of Eastern medicine and
[00:51]
In this episode, you'll learn why sleep deaths silently reduces blood flow to your brain,
[00:57]
and how that leads to fog, fatigue, and migraine flares.
[01:01]
How your brain's night shift cleaning crew works, and what happens when you skip their
[01:07]
What Eastern medicine teaches about deep rest as nourishment, not just downtime, and how
[01:12]
to reclaim it starting tonight.
[01:15]
Stay with me till the end, because you'll uncover not just why you feel foggy after
[01:20]
poor sleep, but how to bring your brain back online again.
[01:24]
Let's start with this truth.
[01:26]
Sleep death is oxygen death.
[01:30]
When you sleep less than your body needs, your brain's vascular system, the web of
[01:36]
tiny vessels that deliver oxygen and glucose, starts to stiffen and constrict.
[01:42]
And over time, this lowers cerebral blood flow, starving neurons of energy for clear
[01:48]
thinking, stable mood, and pain control.
[01:50]
A 2023 study in Scientific Reports showed that even mild sleep restriction increases
[01:56]
oxidative stress in the endothelial cells that line blood vessels, reducing their ability
[02:02]
to dilate and supply oxygen to the brain.
[02:05]
Another open-access study from the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism confirmed
[02:10]
that chronic sleep restriction causes endothelial dysfunction, creating a kind of traffic jam
[02:16]
in your brain's blood flow.
[02:18]
And so, if you've ever had a migraine after a week of poor sleep, you've already felt
[02:25]
Your brain also has a built-in drainage system.
[02:28]
That system is called the glymphatic system.
[02:31]
It works like a night janitor crew.
[02:34]
It flushes away metabolic waste while you sleep.
[02:38]
In deep sleep, cerebrospinal fluid literally washes through the brain, increasing flow
[02:46]
There was a famous study in Science by Xie and O in 2013 that captured this process on
[02:53]
imaging and showed how deep sleep drives toxin clearance from the brain.
[02:59]
Skip that stage, and the waste lingers, leading to morning fog, headaches, and irritability.
[03:05]
Now, mind you, this is from a Western perspective.
[03:07]
It would be really fascinating to add it to the Eastern perspective to have, in my opinion,
[03:14]
And so, modern life confuses rest with pause.
[03:18]
You might scroll your phone, thinking you're relaxing, but your nervous system is still
[03:22]
fight or flight, cortisol is still circulating, and your vessels stay constricted.
[03:28]
That's why you can sleep 8 hours, yet wake up exhausted, because your brain never entered
[03:33]
the phases that repair and restore blood flow.
[03:37]
A 2024 paper in the Journal of Headache and Pain confirmed that disrupted slow-wave sleep
[03:42]
increases cortical hyperexcitability, the same neurological storm that makes migraine
[03:47]
brains overreact to light, sound, and hormonal shifts.
[03:50]
Poor sleep doesn't just make you tired, it primes you for pain.
[03:53]
So when you feel foggy and steady, or like your thoughts are wrapped in cotton, it's
[03:58]
not all in your head emotionally, it's literally in your head biologically.
[04:02]
Now, I agree with everything that is said here, and I agree with every single one of
[04:08]
these scientific journals.
[04:10]
However, I will say something.
[04:13]
In my experience, and in our view, when you take a lot of medications, because you do
[04:17]
have pain, and you have no choice but to take them, you intoxicate your liver even more.
[04:23]
So at night, when your liver detoxes at the same time as your brain, and your liver makes
[04:27]
too much noise, or that detox process is too loud, that wakes you up, and it prevents you
[04:33]
from going into deep sleep, or it wakes you up.
[04:36]
And so you enter a vicious circle, whereby the more you have migraines, the more you
[04:41]
medicate, and the more you medicate, the more your liver is loaded, the more your liver
[04:46]
is loaded, the less you can access deep sleep, or the more you wake up, the more you wake
[04:51]
up, the more you have head pain, et cetera, et cetera.
[04:55]
And so I do appreciate these observations, they would be very interesting on people who
[05:00]
are loaded with migraine medication versus some that do not.
[05:05]
And so, now let's shift to Eastern lens, because here, rest is medicine, in traditional
[05:11]
Chinese medicine, sleep is when the blood returns to the liver.
[05:15]
And during the day, your blood circulates outward, fueling thinking, movement, and emotion,
[05:20]
and at night, it retreats inward to nourish the organ, and to calm the shed and the spirit.
[05:25]
Now when you stay up late, your blood never completes that inward journey, the liver can't
[05:30]
store, or cleans it, and the result is stagnation in the head, showing up as dull pressure,
[05:35]
brain fog, or migraines upon waking.
[05:38]
There's a saying in traditional Chinese medicine that the liver governs planning, and the heart
[05:42]
governs rest, and when the liver is overworked, the heart never rests, and so you become empty
[05:48]
of energy, yet full of agitation, does that resonate?
[05:52]
That's brain fog in energetic form, it's depletion disguised as overdrive.
[05:57]
I'll say that again, depletion, that is disguised as overdrive.
[06:03]
You're so exhausted, you can't rest anymore.
[06:07]
In ancient Thaiist medicine, depressed was called wu-wei, effortless, doing, it meant
[06:12]
that the body heals itself, best in stillness, what western science called restoring cerebral
[06:19]
blood flow, Thaoist described as letting chi return to its riverbeds.
[06:23]
You may have felt this before, those mornings when you do wake up, clear-headed, and light,
[06:29]
as if your thoughts are quietly floating instead of dragging.
[06:32]
As your chi and blood moving in harmony again.
[06:35]
From an Ayurvedic view, this is the perfect storm of vata, too much movement, and pitta,
[06:40]
too much heat, late nights, screens, and stress throughout the nervous system, the soul of
[06:44]
your brain, making blood flow harder to nourish it.
[06:48]
The solution isn't forcing sleep, it's to rebuilding that inner ground.
[06:53]
So if you've been in chronic overdrive, here's where to start, try to wind down earlier,
[06:59]
warm your feet before bed, and turn off your screens early.
[07:03]
You're not chasing perfection, you're rebuilding trust between your body and stillness.
[07:08]
Because in the East, sleep isn't off-time, it's refueling time.
[07:12]
Your brain isn't shutting down, it's finally being allowed to heal, cleanse, and breathe.
[07:17]
And maybe that's the message behind your brain fog.
[07:20]
Your body isn't failing, it's pleading for restoration.
[07:24]
Now again, it's a little bit of a chicken and egg in my view.
[07:27]
And you can have all of the right habits, yet sleep doesn't just come.
[07:32]
I remember this story from a woman called Jade in Singapore.
[07:36]
And Jade had no more migraines, and she calls me a couple of weeks after.
[07:40]
She actually texted me, but back then we were on WhatsApp, not yet in the app.
[07:44]
And she texted me and she said, Dianne, Dianne, something else happened, outside of not having
[07:49]
My deep sleep doubled.
[07:51]
And I know you're the only change in my life,
[07:55]
so I never asked for that.
[07:56]
Can you explain to me how it happened?
[07:59]
And it turned out, yes, I explained to her, of course, I need to make you deep sleep,
[08:02]
otherwise I can't restore your brain, of course, right?
[08:05]
So that's what I do.
[08:06]
And I explained to her the process of it.
[08:08]
But she was fascinated.
[08:09]
And so since then, waking up between 1 to 3 a.m. is really something that we ask for.
[08:14]
Waking up around 4 to 5 a.m. is something that we ask for inside the Migraine Heroes
[08:19]
Not just because it's nice to have, but because these are indications of the health of certain
[08:25]
parts of your body, certain organs that relate to the brain, and we need those to operate
[08:31]
I say, of course, it's a chicken and egg, because if you medicate a lot, it will be
[08:35]
a lot harder for your liver to process the detox overnight.
[08:39]
And that absence of being able to detox is going to fuel into migraines.
[08:43]
That's what science calls rebound migraines or medication overuse headaches.
[08:47]
They come, namely, in my view, based on all of the data that I've seen in the world, they
[08:52]
come mainly from that.
[08:53]
So if that's you, take it step by step, track, try to understand your migraine patterns,
[08:59]
how you can decrease them so that you can end improve your sleep and improve your brain
[09:05]
I know it sounds like getting to the moon and back, and maybe it is, but it's feasible.
[09:11]
And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom.
[09:16]
You are powerful, you are resilient, and you're no longer alone.
[09:21]
Keep rising, Migraine Hero.
