[00:00]
What if election nights, breaking news, and global crisis don't just stress you out,
[00:05]
but actually shape the rhythm of your migraines?
[00:10]
Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers
[00:14]
who've seen countless doctors with no results.
[00:18]
Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks without endless medications or constant sacrifices.
[00:24]
Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme. I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine,
[00:30]
even after suffering for up to 60 years.
[00:33]
My mission in life? To bring this relief to a million people
[00:37]
using a unique blend of Eastern medicine and Western science.
[00:43]
In this episode, you'll learn how political stress and world events
[00:47]
can literally disrupt your sleep and biometrics.
[00:50]
Why your nervous system reacts so strongly to fear, anger, and overexposure to the news cycle.
[00:56]
What Eastern wisdom teaches us about protecting your mind and body in times of collective unrest.
[01:02]
Stay with me till the end, because by the end of this episode,
[01:05]
you'll understand why something as far away as an election in another country,
[01:09]
or a war in another country, can feel like it's happening inside your own head.
[01:16]
I will also share with you how I personally read, or do not read, the news.
[01:21]
Let's start with watching the news and its impact on sleep.
[01:25]
So, wearable device and biomarker studies show that during major political events,
[01:29]
like elections, sleep quality significantly declines.
[01:34]
A 2020 study in Sleep Health found that Americans slept 25 minutes less on election night,
[01:41]
and their resting heart rate spiked the next day.
[01:45]
Why does that matter?
[01:46]
Poor sleep and increased arousal are two of the strongest predictors of migraine attacks in the West.
[01:53]
Another study in Nature Human Behavior in 2017
[01:58]
looked at stress biomarkers during the Trump-Clinton election,
[02:02]
and people showed measurable increase in cortisol and disrupted circadian rhythms.
[02:07]
And chronic disruption to cortisol balance isn't just stress,
[02:12]
it actively sensitizes the migraine brain.
[02:15]
It's not only elections.
[02:17]
Wars, terrorist attacks, or even a relentless news cycle can create what is called
[02:22]
second trauma when you read about violence, instability, or propaganda,
[02:27]
and your body responds as if you were in danger yourself.
[02:32]
Heart rate, blood pressure, amylda activity, and TMJ symptoms rise.
[02:37]
For someone predisposed to migraine, this is like adding fuel to a fire already going on.
[02:43]
Here are a few examples from our work at Migraine Heroes.
[02:46]
These are women I know personally.
[02:49]
I remember this Ukrainian woman living in the U.S.,
[02:52]
and as we were working together, she was at some point struggling,
[02:55]
and she shared her husband was still in Ukraine when the war broke out.
[03:00]
Her fear, her resentment, her constant thinking and worry for him,
[03:04]
and nightly news checking created this huge set of migraine attacks
[03:09]
that were mirroring her emotional state.
[03:12]
Then I remember this woman from Israel.
[03:15]
After decades of being told to accept her pain and to medicate in silence,
[03:19]
it was powerful to finally meet her, map her patterns, and see her migraines begin to ease.
[03:24]
In her tracker, the progress was there,
[03:27]
until suddenly being forced into bomb shelters in Israel that disrupted her newly gained stability.
[03:33]
The stress reignited the migraines,
[03:35]
showing how even when the body is physically safe,
[03:38]
the nervous system can't always separate safety from threat.
[03:42]
Since then and those two events, we do tackle that very proactively with Dulci,
[03:46]
as that level of trauma and emotions can really impact migraine.
[03:52]
When we see it, we act on it.
[03:54]
Here's what's more, political stress is contagious.
[03:58]
A 2019 study in Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences
[04:02]
found that media exposure to political conflict increases anxiety and physiological stress,
[04:08]
even when events are thousands of miles away.
[04:11]
For migraine sufferers, this is like carrying someone else's tension on top of your own.
[04:16]
So the science is clear. Political unrest is going to disrupt your sleep and circadian rhythms,
[04:21]
elevate your stress hormones like cortisol, and spark inflammation and nervous system arousal,
[04:27]
all of which can increase the intensity and frequency of your migraine attack overnight.
[04:32]
In Eastern tradition, health is not only seen as an individual balance,
[04:37]
but also as a response to your environment.
[04:41]
In traditional transmedicine, excessive exposure to fear,
[04:44]
anger or grief disrupts the delicate balance of organ systems connected to the brain.
[04:48]
Fear is going to unsettle the kidney system, the root of our vitality and nervous system regulation.
[04:54]
When fear lingers, the kidney system weakens,
[04:57]
and with that, the sense of security that anchors the mind.
[05:01]
Grief is going to burden the lung system.
[05:04]
The lung is the organ of letting go and boundary with the world.
[05:08]
When grief is unprocessed, the lungs tighten, their energy stagnates,
[05:12]
and their connection with the kidney creates a loop of exhaustion and vulnerability.
[05:17]
Together, weakened lungs and kidneys often manifest in the sinuses,
[05:21]
this was what we observed day to day,
[05:23]
pressure, congestion and headaches that feel inseparable from the weight of emotion.
[05:28]
And meanwhile, we have the spleen, which governs digestion and thoughts,
[05:32]
is going to weaken under the burden of constant information.
[05:35]
In traditional transmedicine, this is called over-rumination.
[05:39]
The more propaganda, advertising and non-stop media you absorb,
[05:43]
the heavier and foggier your spleen becomes.
[05:46]
That darkness shows up as brain fog, fatigue and yes, migraines.
[05:51]
And here's the part that few people realize,
[05:54]
it's not just elections or wars that trigger migraines,
[05:56]
it's the way the information itself is delivered.
[06:00]
Advertising and propaganda are designed to hijack your nervous system,
[06:04]
to make you feel outrage, urgency or fear,
[06:07]
so that you'll stay engaged, so that you'll read the article.
[06:10]
But every time you take that bait, your stress hormones spike.
[06:14]
For someone with migraine, that's like stepping into a storm.
[06:18]
Eastern medicine reminds us, while we cannot control the world's chaos,
[06:22]
we can control how much of it we let into our body and mind.
[06:25]
And so let me share with you a non-political example
[06:28]
that may apply directly to you in your life.
[06:31]
Yesterday, just yesterday, I had dinner with an old family friend.
[06:36]
She has a guinea pig ranch, which is quite uncommon,
[06:39]
in which my daughter works once a week.
[06:41]
And she's done that for several years.
[06:44]
And we have her for dinner from time to time.
[06:46]
She's honestly a sweetheart.
[06:48]
She's vegetarian, by respect for animals.
[06:50]
And so we always prepare a very nice vegetarian meal.
[06:53]
So she's into animal welfare and Facebook understood that about her.
[06:57]
They know that if they send her a video of an animal being poorly treated,
[07:02]
like really mistreated. She gave me some really bad examples.
[07:05]
I'm not going to give here.
[07:06]
She's likely to give to that charity.
[07:09]
And she was saying how hard it is now for her to undo these algorithms that trace her
[07:15]
as they know how to trigger her emotions and open her wallet.
[07:19]
So her computer knows how to trigger her on a weekly basis.
[07:23]
Now, she does not suffer from migraine disease.
[07:26]
And she already notices how much these videos can impact her emotional state and actions.
[07:32]
Your empathy is a gift.
[07:35]
But without boundaries, it can become your migraine trigger.
[07:39]
I'll tell you very honestly something that all of my family members know.
[07:42]
I don't read the press unless I need to make a decision with the given information,
[07:48]
which happens, honestly, every five years or so.
[07:51]
And you know what?
[07:53]
If it's really important, people will actually talk to you about it and will let you know.
[07:58]
The way they would relate the information will be less traumatizing than from the media.
[08:03]
Journalism, don't get me wrong, is super important.
[08:05]
It's just not the best for sensitive souls, empathetic souls, and people with migraines.
[08:11]
I'm not saying it's a good thing.
[08:12]
I'm just saying it's a protective mechanism I've had for a very long time.
[08:16]
So some practical techniques include mindful media diet.
[08:22]
You know, everyone's going to talk to you about your food diet.
[08:24]
I want to talk about your media diet.
[08:26]
Only consume news when it informs a decision, not when it feeds endless rumination, fear, or anger.
[08:33]
Spot the bots, those robots and algorithms that feed your internet with the news that
[08:38]
trigger you just like my old friend.
[08:41]
Have a soothing ritual,
[08:43]
a rom-com movie like I have, or a calming music, or a joyful walk.
[08:48]
These aren't trivial.
[08:49]
They reset your nervous system and soothe your Shen, your spirit.
[08:52]
And then have ground practices,
[08:54]
warm teas, breathing exercises, and gentle acupressure at points like the yin tang,
[08:59]
the one just between your eyebrows, to calm an overactive mind.
[09:04]
And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom.
[09:11]
You are resilient.
[09:13]
And you are no longer alone.
[09:15]
Keep rising, migraine hero.
