[00:00]
Feeling like your next migraine is stalking you?
[00:03]
What if you could learn to face the fear instead of fleeing from it?
[00:10]
Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers who've seen countless doctors with
[00:18]
Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks without endless medications or constant sacrifices.
[00:23]
Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme.
[00:25]
I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine, even after suffering for up to 60
[00:33]
My mission in life?
[00:34]
To bring this relief to a million people using a unique blend of Eastern medicine and Western
[00:40]
In this episode, you will learn how anxiety and fear fuel the migraine cycle and practical
[00:49]
tools to break that loop.
[00:52]
rooted in modern science to calm your nervous system fast, and self-care habits that you
[00:57]
can start today to regain confidence and stop being ruled by your next headache.
[01:03]
Stay with me until the end as the coping strategies I will share here and that worked at Migraine
[01:08]
Heroes might actually be quite different from what you've been reading or have been taught.
[01:14]
At least that was the case for me.
[01:17]
Let's talk about anxiety and why it's more than just a side effect when it comes to migraines.
[01:23]
For so many of you living with migraine, anxiety isn't just a feeling, it's a pattern.
[01:29]
You start fearing the next attack, scanning your body for early warning signs, avoiding
[01:34]
certain foods, smells, or even social plans.
[01:37]
This constant state of alertness.
[01:41]
Here's what the research tells us.
[01:43]
If you suffer from migraines, you're up to five times more likely to experience anxiety.
[01:49]
And anxiety is strongly tied to how often and how intensely you get migraines.
[01:55]
It's not just emotional noise, it's a biological trigger.
[02:00]
A major 2023 study out of Germany found something powerful.
[02:05]
Every single anxiety symptom, trouble sleeping, trouble relaxing, racing thoughts, makes migraine
[02:13]
More days of pain, more tension, more impact on your life.
[02:17]
And get this, in the US, if you get three or more migraine days a month, you already
[02:21]
qualify for an anxiety screening.
[02:24]
That's how closely the two are linked.
[02:28]
What's happening in the brain?
[02:30]
Chronic worry keeps your stress system activated.
[02:32]
Cortisol rises, muscles in your neck and scalp tighten, your nervous system gets jumpy, hypersensitive.
[02:40]
It's the perfect storm for just another attack.
[02:44]
And here's the kicker,
[02:46]
the more you try to avoid the pain, the worse it gets.
[02:50]
Avoidance and catastrophizing shrink your world and ramp up your suffering.
[02:57]
So let's break down the different states of the nervous system and then be able to understand
[03:03]
So imagine your nervous system as a security system.
[03:06]
It's job to keep you safe.
[03:08]
And according to Dr. Stephen Porteous, the neuroscientist behind the polyvagal theory,
[03:13]
it's not just one alarm system,
[03:15]
it's a whole layered network with three distinct states.
[03:20]
State number one, what is called safe and social,
[03:23]
your ventral vagus state, what I prefer to call your rest and digest.
[03:28]
This is your I feel calm, I feel connected, composed, curious.
[03:32]
Your heart rate is steady, your breath is relaxed, and you're open to others.
[03:37]
This is where healing happens, when you feel safe in your body and the world around you.
[03:43]
This is when the food we recommend you in Migrant Heroes go to the right place.
[03:49]
State number two, fight or flight, the sympathetic system.
[03:53]
When you sense danger, this gear kicks in.
[03:57]
You feel jittery, anxious, your heart races, you're ready to run or fight.
[04:02]
It's your body's way of saying, something's not right,
[04:05]
let's get out of here.
[04:07]
There's not too much room for digestion here, as you can guess.
[04:10]
Your body is in a panic alarm mode, and there's no room for anything else really.
[04:16]
State number three, freeze or shutdown, the dorsal vagus system.
[04:21]
If the danger feels too overwhelming, or there's no way to escape, your system may go into shutdown.
[04:29]
You feel numb, disconnected, maybe even hopeless.
[04:33]
This is your body saying, let's power down to survive.
[04:36]
This is something I see in my work a lot as well.
[04:41]
What's beautiful about polyvagal theory is that it reminds us our responses are not flows,
[04:47]
they're ancient survival wisdom.
[04:49]
Your body is doing its best with what it knows.
[04:53]
But here's where it gets tricky, because while your body thinks it's protecting you,
[04:57]
it can sometimes get stuck in overprotection mode.
[05:01]
That ancient worrying doesn't always match modern life, so you might find yourself panicking
[05:06]
in a situation that isn't actually dangerous.
[05:09]
It's not your fault, but it can limit your freedom, your relationships, your joy.
[05:14]
That's why awareness matters.
[05:16]
Once you understand what your nervous system is doing, you can start to work with it instead
[05:21]
of feeling trapped by it.
[05:24]
So then what to do?
[05:26]
Before I tell you what to do, I want to share how I found out, because this changed everything
[05:31]
for many of our heroes.
[05:34]
So when someone finishes their journey with us at Migraine Heroes, when they're feeling migraine-free,
[05:38]
I try to meet with them.
[05:41]
I do an exit interview, just the two of us.
[05:43]
It's almost like I meet them for the first time, and I ask, how did you go?
[05:48]
What could we do better?
[05:50]
And most importantly, what will you do with your precious life moving forward?
[05:54]
I always try to do them.
[05:56]
It's not always realistic, given my agenda, but I try to.
[05:59]
It gives me so much joy.
[06:01]
And I know it might sound surreal, but it's very real.
[06:03]
And these moments are full of joy and grace.
[06:05]
And this is my carrot for all the work that I do.
[06:08]
One day, I had such a conversation with a woman named Dulti.
[06:12]
Dulti had lived through 4,000 consecutive days of migraine.
[06:16]
And when I asked her, now that you have time and clarity again, what will you do?
[06:22]
She posed and she said, I want to work more.
[06:24]
I'm trained to help people with trauma.
[06:27]
And that was a light bulb moment.
[06:29]
At Migraine Heroes, we try to help 100% of the people we serve.
[06:32]
I meet each person over Zoom.
[06:34]
It's soul to soul.
[06:35]
But there were a few profiles at that given time, a few people we weren't helping enough.
[06:41]
And the only common thread they had was trauma.
[06:44]
So I asked Dulti, can I send some of them to you?
[06:48]
Mind you, we weren't profitable.
[06:49]
This was coming out of my own pocket, and I had no intention to make them pay more.
[06:53]
But I had to know, were we doing everything right with food and lifestyle?
[06:58]
And why wasn't the body ready to heal?
[07:01]
The feedback, raving, deep, powerful, lasting change.
[07:07]
So much so, that I sat down with Hélène, one of our health practitioners. And we wondered
[07:12]
together, would this help people with anxiety too, even without trauma?
[07:18]
And it did, again and again.
[07:20]
Today, Dulti is a full part of the team.
[07:22]
If you're on the app, and you have access to the chat, or if you've joined any of our
[07:26]
support groups across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, you've likely met her.
[07:31]
And this is why we don't just treat symptoms, we follow the story until the story changes.
[07:37]
So what do you do when an anxiety attack shows up?
[07:42]
You don't fight it, you don't scold yourself, you acknowledge it.
[07:48]
You say to your body, hey, I know you're feeling anxious, even though we're actually safe.
[07:53]
You don't try to fix yourself, you sit with it.
[07:56]
You normalize the sensation, you expect it. And when it comes, you greet it, like an old
[08:04]
there you are! No panic, no resistance, just presence.
[08:09]
You tell yourself, it's okay for my nervous system to respond this way. Because what's
[08:15]
really happening is this, you're no longer afraid of being afraid. And that, that is
[08:22]
the turning point.
[08:24]
Then gently you ask your body, what do you need to feel safe again, dear body?
[08:28]
And maybe it's eye contact with someone calm. Maybe it's deep breathing. Maybe it's limping
[08:33]
into a soft pullover that carries good memories. Maybe it's looking at a photo that reminds
[08:38]
you of a time when you felt safe, loved, and grounded. Maybe
[08:42]
you're externalizing your body and saying, I expected this.
[08:47]
It's one of your modes, and I'm here to support you in that mode.
[08:51]
Now I know this may sound abstract, but I've seen it work over and over again.
[08:56]
Let me share a story.
[08:58]
One of our heroes, we call her Patricia. She just celebrated today, her fourth day pain-free
[09:04]
after years of chronic migraines. Years, she was chronic, daily.
[09:08]
When she joined our group calls, what she felt most grateful for, that was a couple
[09:12]
of weeks ago, probably at least a month ago, wasn't the lack of pain. She was still in
[09:18]
she no longer feared the pain. And that, my friends, is a kind of freedom we don't talk
[09:24]
Her daughter even joined one of our calls and thanked us.
[09:29]
She thanked me in an onboarding call for giving back her mother. And therefore she decided
[09:34]
to start on the program as well.
[09:35]
And so I want to thank Patricia for her energy, for what she brings in the world, for that
[09:40]
beauty of letting go and accepting and welcoming her fear, and therefore letting me do my job
[09:46]
and have the foods enter the body the way they have to enter and do what they're supposed
[09:51]
So if this feels abstract right now, maybe listen to this again. Just that little part.
[09:58]
Try it out. Sit with it. Try it and come back to it. Let me know where you are and see the
[10:03]
new sensation awaken from there.
[10:06]
You don't need fancy tools. Your body already knows what to do. You're just learning to
[10:11]
listen and to lead with calm and compassion.
[10:15]
And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom.
[10:20]
You are powerful, you are resilient, and you are no longer alone.
[10:25]
Keep rising, Migrant Hero. You are powerful, you are resilient, and you are no longer alone.
