You keep pushing through one more email, one more scroll — until the screen blurs, colors pulse, and the edges of your vision begin to shimmer. It’s not just fatigue. In a world bathed in blue light, your brain is overstimulated, your nervous system on edge, and your eyes are paying the price.

In this episode of The Migraine Heroes Podcast, host Diane Ducarme unpacks how modern light exposure hijacks your body’s natural rhythms. Drawing from both Western neuroscience and Eastern medicine, she reveals how screens, stress, and overstimulation keep your brain in “on” mode — and what you can do to calm the circuitry.

You’ll discover: 💡 How blue-wavelength light activates the same neural pathways that control alertness, pain, and stress 💡 Why constant screen time disrupts melatonin, sleep, and recovery — making your brain more sensitive to triggers 💡 Simple, restorative practices to help your nervous system down-shift from reactive to regulated

You’ll also learn how Traditional Chinese Medicine sees the eyes as the “windows of the Liver,” meaning that overstimulation drains your body’s Qi and depletes the calm you need to heal. If your migraines, insomnia, or tension rise with every notification, this episode will help you reclaim the calm beneath the glare.

You keep pushing through one more email, one more scroll, until you start to see dots,

[00:06]

prisms, dark angles, rainbows, tunnel vision.

[00:11]

It's not just fatigue.

[00:13]

In a world lit by blue light, how are you supposed to live?

[00:21]

Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers who've seen countless doctors with

[00:27]

no results.

[00:29]

Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks without endless medications or constant sacrifices.

[00:34]

Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme, I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine, even

[00:41]

after suffering for up to 60 years.

[00:44]

My mission in life?

[00:45]

To bring this relief to a million people, using a unique blend of Eastern medicine and Western

[00:51]

science.

[00:55]

In this episode, you will learn how exposure to blue wave length light and screen time

[01:00]

activate brain networks tied to alertness, pain, and stress.

[01:05]

Why your screen habits may be sending your nervous system into overdrive, affecting sleep,

[01:12]

sensitivity, and migraine risk.

[01:15]

And how both Western neuroscience and Eastern wisdom help you downshift from reactive to

[01:21]

regulated.

[01:23]

Stay with me till the end, because once you see how your devices and your brain are wired

[01:27]

together, you'll understand why the quietest moments still feel loud.

[01:33]

Your brain is wired to notice light, specifically the short waves, the blue end of the spectrum.

[01:40]

Because evolution said daylight means wake, and dusk means to wind down.

[01:47]

But when your phone, your tablet, our computer screen keeps sending that daylight signal

[01:52]

at dusk, your brain stays wired to wake.

[01:56]

And so research shows that even a 30 minute exposure to blue wave length light increases

[02:02]

activation in the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain that handles focus, judgment,

[02:08]

and alertness.

[02:10]

And it also affects melatonin production, so the hormone that tells your body it's

[02:14]

time to sleep.

[02:15]

So there was a study from Harvard Medical School that found that blue light delayed

[02:19]

melatonin release by double time compared to green light.

[02:24]

Now imagine this, you've already got a brain sensitive to change, say from migraine, hormone,

[02:29]

or stress, and you feed that system more alert signals when you scroll at night.

[02:35]

And the result is your nervous system doesn't just stay wired to day, it accumulates tension

[02:40]

that shows up tomorrow in pain, fog, or fatigue.

[02:44]

And so studies indicate that screen time and blue light exposure correlate with poor sleep

[02:49]

quality, reduced cognitive performance, and increased alertness at time your brain should

[02:55]

be winding down.

[02:57]

So I tell you, I observed that too, and so I went from a Netflix evening to a book evening,

[03:02]

and I have to say the quality of my sleep improves quite a bit, and I dream a lot more.

[03:07]

I have really happy dreams thanks to that.

[03:09]

And so that heightened alertness doesn't always feel like an alert, it often shows

[03:14]

as restlessness, tension behind the eyes, lower pain threshold, especially for people

[03:19]

prone to sensory or nervous system sensitivity.

[03:22]

So it's not about demonizing screens, let's face it, you can't live without.

[03:26]

It's about recognizing that your brain is listening, and if you keep sending it wake

[03:30]

up message when it should be saying rest, you're choosing stimulation over recovery.

[03:35]

In traditional Chinese medicine, if we go east for a minute, your nervous system isn't

[03:39]

separate from your senses, it's your sort of internal weather.

[03:43]

And screens and blue light are like a restless sun, sort of energy pouring in when the body

[03:49]

expects dust.

[03:51]

When your internal rhythm is off, your head becomes a place where light gathers, energy

[03:56]

rattles, and rest feels impossible.

[03:59]

And so the wisdom says when your outer light doesn't match your inner time, your yin, so

[04:03]

the aspect cooling, rest-oriented energy, gets blocked, and your yang, the doing, the

[04:08]

alerting energy, keeps running.

[04:11]

And the result is internal wind, it's restlessness, migraine, and tension.

[04:16]

And so the path back isn't more effort, it's dialing down.

[04:20]

Simple practices can include darkening your screen, or using warm light after sunset.

[04:25]

In the Migraine Heroes app, we just introduced the dark mode, which is very exciting, a lot

[04:29]

of people love it.

[04:30]

Putting devices aside an hour before bed, I tried to do that, yeah, like an hour, an hour

[04:36]

and a half.

[04:37]

It's hard, it's really hard,

[04:38]

I have to say, I won't master it, but I definitely try.

[04:42]

Eating without screens, and really mindfully eating, breathing deeply, noticing stillness.

[04:47]

These signal to your body it's safe to rest now, the resting and digesting phase of the

[04:53]

vagus nerve.

[04:54]

When your body hears safety, your inner light dims.

[04:58]

When your inner light dims, your brain can finally shift from fight to flow.

[05:03]

So if you feel bothered by your screen habits, the headaches, the restlessness night, the

[05:08]

sense that your brain never quite quiets, know this, you're not failing your device,

[05:13]

you're just misaligning your rhythm.

[05:16]

Your nervous system isn't broken, it's listening too loudly.

[05:21]

It makes me think of some of the women we help, they're in so much pain every single

[05:25]

day that are bedridden, they don't have an excess of blue light, they have a deficiency

[05:30]

of blue light.

[05:31]

They will spend days and days in bed until their body is completely out of tune with

[05:38]

the actual rhythm of nature,

[05:41]

and so that's going to make them, their circadian rhythm really messed up, and prolong the effect

[05:46]

of the migraine.

[05:47]

So too much blue light is a problem, but also too little, or at the wrong time, is also very

[05:53]

difficult to manage.

[05:55]

Switching off the blue is a weakness, it's recalibration,

[05:58]

and each time you do it, you're giving your brain a chance to drop the guard, unwind the

[06:02]

sensors, and return to its natural rhythm.

[06:06]

Because healing is not about eliminating light, it's about balancing it, turning down the

[06:11]

volume in your inner temple, so your body can finally hear the whisper, you're safe, rest

[06:17]

now.

[06:18]

Now I want to mention something important, in everything that we have learned at Migraine

[06:22]

Heroes over the last 6 years through the app and the service,

[06:25]

at a minimum, we've seen two types of eye-related migraines.

[06:29]

One is sensitivity to light, so aura, the dots, the prisms, the rainbow, the tunnel,

[06:35]

the going blind momentarily,

[06:38]

and this is what this podcast is referring to,

[06:40]

this is usually triggered by excess blue light, or, or, or, it's really important because there's an

[06:45]

imbalance inside of the body that allows to tolerate this, or that doesn't tolerate light.

[06:52]

And so what's going to happen is, you're going to go to the ophthalmologist, and they will see

[06:56]

everything's fine, with your vision,

[06:59]

and you might say, uh, I wonder how that can be fine,

[07:01]

I just have so many visual problems, but they'll see your eyes are technically fine.

[07:05]

And so this is what this podcast is about.

[07:08]

Now there's a second type of migraine related to the eyes, which is different,

[07:13]

it's pressure behind the eyes, which has nothing to do with exposure to light.

[07:19]

Behind your eyes, you have some of the smallest canals and vessels in your body,

[07:23]

and when you get those clogged up, you will get behind the eyes migraines.

[07:27]

But that one will be the objective of another podcast,

[07:29]

it's a lot more pressure building and not sensitivity to light per se.

[07:33]

Last but not least, I had a tea yesterday with my customer number 12,

[07:37]

I served her six years ago, and I failed her miserably.

[07:41]

She had this sort of every single day thing behind the right eye, that we never found what

[07:46]

it was.

[07:47]

Now, at the time, I only knew about the first type of migraines with the eyes,

[07:51]

I didn't know about the second type.

[07:53]

So hold in tight for us,

[07:55]

we hope that we can get it out this time around.

[07:58]

And if it's not that, then I can promise you, we'll definitely get to the bottom of it and

[08:02]

do a podcast about it too.

[08:04]

And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom.

[08:10]

You are powerful, you're resilient, and you are no longer alone. Keep rising,

[08:16]

migraine hero. You are powerful, you're resilient, and you are no longer alone.
