Ever felt like gravity just gave up on you?

[00:03]

You are standing still, but your body feels it's falling or floating or spinning through

[00:09]

the air.

[00:10]

That's vertigo.

[00:12]

And for many migraine sufferers, it's not just a side effect, it's a clue.

[00:20]

Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers who've seen countless doctors with

[00:25]

no results.

[00:28]

Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks without endless medications or constant sacrifices.

[00:33]

Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme, I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine, even

[00:39]

after suffering for up to 60 years.

[00:43]

My mission in life?

[00:44]

To bring this relief to a million people using a unique blend of Eastern medicine and Western

[00:49]

science.

[00:53]

In this episode, you will learn why vertigo often appears before, during or after a migraine

[00:59]

attack and what it's trying to tell you.

[01:01]

What really causes that spinning, folding or floating feeling from a scientific perspective.

[01:07]

And how ancient Eastern wisdom uses grounding and flow to bring your world back into balance.

[01:14]

Now stay with me until the end, because we'll explore how Eastern medicine reframes vertigo

[01:19]

not as a symptom, but as a signal from your body's inner compass.

[01:24]

Let's begin with the Western understanding of vertigo and migraines.

[01:28]

Vertigo is more than dizziness, it's a false sense of motion, where your body feels like

[01:33]

it's moving when it's not.

[01:36]

Some describe it as spinning, others as being pulled sideways or falling through space.

[01:42]

Now when vertigo and migraine appear together, researchers say it's not a coincidence, it's

[01:48]

shared circuitry.

[01:49]

A 2021 study published in the Journal of Headache and Pain by Putman found that over 30% of

[01:56]

migraine patients experience vertigo or balance disturbances even outside of headache attacks.

[02:03]

This means your inner ear and your migraine brain are in constant conversation.

[02:08]

The reason lies in the brainstem, specifically in the area called the vestibular nuclei,

[02:14]

a hub that coordinates balance, eye movement, and spatial orientation.

[02:19]

During a migraine episode, the brainstem becomes hyperactive, confusing the signals coming

[02:25]

from your eyes and inner ear.

[02:28]

In simpler terms, your brain receives mixed messages.

[02:32]

The eyes say, we're still, and the inner ear says, we're moving, and your brain, unsure

[02:38]

who to believe, creates the illusion of motion, vertigo.

[02:44]

Another 2022 paper, Encephalalgia, showed that patients with migraines and vertigo have

[02:50]

altered blood flow in the posterior circulation of the brain, particularly near the cerebellum,

[02:56]

which coordinates balance.

[02:58]

This means blood vessel changes, core to migraine, can literally disrupt your sense of ground.

[03:05]

Common triggers?

[03:06]

Well, we have hormonal shifts, of course, especially before menstruation, stress and

[03:10]

tension, which tighten neck muscles and reduce blood flow to the head, dehydration or skipped

[03:15]

meals, sleep irregularity, sensory overload, sort of bright lines, loud noises, crowded

[03:20]

spaces.

[03:21]

What is interesting is that vertigo doesn't always happen during a headache.

[03:26]

It can precede it as an aura, follow it as a hangover, or occur completely independently.

[03:33]

Traditional treatment focused on stabilizing blood vessels and calming the nervous system,

[03:38]

using medications.

[03:39]

But as noted in Northwestern University 2020 clinical review, medications help the symptoms,

[03:47]

not always the instability underneath them.

[03:50]

Then I also have to say, from a migraine hero's perspective, if you look at medications long

[03:54]

term, they can also create more of these symptoms.

[03:58]

And I think we look forward to contributing to, with universities, all of that will take

[04:02]

time.

[04:03]

We're still a small team, but the data that we have really indicates you need to look

[04:07]

at things long term to really understand the implications of medication.

[04:11]

That's why Western neurologists also now explore multisensory rehabilitation, training the

[04:17]

brain to realign visual balance and body feedback loops through gentle exercises, gait stabilization

[04:23]

and controlled movement exposure.

[04:26]

Because ultimately vertigo isn't just about the head, it's about how your brain perceives

[04:30]

stability.

[04:31]

This is the root of the West.

[04:33]

For me, respectfully, it feels like taking a rock and rolling it a cliff, and the explanation

[04:38]

makes sense, but the way to go about it does not feel it would shield you from much of

[04:42]

these sensations.

[04:43]

And that's exactly where Eastern medicine takes the conversation much deeper.

[04:49]

In traditional Chinese medicine, vertigo isn't a head problem, it's a flow problem.

[04:54]

When your inner energy, your qi, rises suddenly upward or becomes blocked, your body loosens

[05:00]

its sense of grounding.

[05:02]

And rising qi can take blood, heat and wind with it, disturbing the balance between head

[05:06]

and feet, heaven and earth.

[05:10]

Now I hear you.

[05:11]

These terms may seem esoteric and not mean much.

[05:14]

But trust me, we apply them every day with extreme rigor in Migrant Heroes, tracking

[05:19]

every single one of the people we work for, measuring our rate of success and progress

[05:25]

for everyone.

[05:27]

And they are real, and they're working,

[05:29]

it's just a very different way to look at life and at the body.

[05:32]

More big picture, less details.

[05:35]

There are three common traditional Chinese medicine patterns behind vertigo.

[05:39]

You have number one, liver yang rising, so caused by stress, anger or overwork,

[05:44]

and the energy is going to shoot up, bring dizziness and headaches,

[05:48]

and that's where the vertigo comes from.

[05:50]

A second route can be a phlegm damp accumulation from sort of weak digestion or heavy foods,

[05:57]

leading to muddled sensation, nausea and brain fog,

[06:01]

that's another kind.

[06:02]

The third kind can be qi and blood deficiency from exhaustion or chronic illness or having

[06:08]

lost a lot of blood, where the brain simply isn't nourished enough to stay steady.

[06:14]

And sometimes, all of the above.

[06:16]

And at Migrant Heroes, we tackle these root causes, the vertigo and the dizziness that

[06:21]

may come with it,

[06:22]

and no need for exercises every day,

[06:24]

just adding the foods to balance inside of the body comes back,

[06:28]

that's how we work.

[06:30]

Because in Eastern philosophy, the cure isn't found in suppressing or rewiring movement,

[06:35]

it's found in relearning stillness and order.

[06:38]

Now this is so important, because vertigo isn't random,

[06:42]

it's your brain's way of crying out for balance, both literally and metaphorically.

[06:48]

When the world starts spinning, it's not weakness,

[06:51]

it's your inner compass saying, something inside me needs help.

[06:56]

No one should ever tell you, it's all in your head,

[06:58]

if it's in your head, it's in your body.

[07:01]

Your brain is doing its best to recalibrate, to find harmony between motion and stillness.

[07:06]

Vertigo is your brain's poetry,

[07:08]

it's a way of reminding you that clarity, rest and grounding are not luxuries, but essentials.

[07:13]

Instead of fighting the dizziness, start listening to it,

[07:17]

ask what your brain needs,

[07:19]

put your mind at the service of your brain,

[07:21]

let reason serve wisdom, not silence it.

[07:26]

When doing external podcasts, I came to know a podcast host who was doing analysis on perimenopause.

[07:32]

She was surveying an entire community on their symptoms, a very generous community.

[07:36]

About 6,000 people replied to her survey on perimenopause and their symptoms, and it struck

[07:41]

me the high prevalence of vertigo in perimenopause,

[07:44]

it makes complete sense, but it's so not addressed in Western science.

[07:49]

There is some shame and acceptance with it that needs to change, and it can.

[07:54]

Now, what can you do in your home today if you have vertigo?

[07:58]

Because while it's delicate to fix, it's important that it does not get aggravated.

[08:03]

If you have vertigo, please avoid wine, specifically, among the alcohol, ginger, garlic, spicy foods

[08:11]

and turmeric.

[08:13]

And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom.

[08:19]

You are powerful, you are resilient, and you are no longer alone.

[08:25]

Keep rising, migraine hero.
