[00:00]
What if that flashy daily scoop of powder you trust for precision health is the very
[00:06]
thing keeping your low-grain migraines drumming?
[00:13]
Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers who've seen countless doctors with
[00:21]
Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks without endless medications or constant sacrifices.
[00:26]
Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme.
[00:28]
I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine, even after suffering for up to 60
[00:36]
My mission in life?
[00:37]
To bring this relief to a million people, using a unique blend of Eastern medicine and
[00:46]
In this episode, you will learn why powdered supplements from protein blends to adaptogen
[00:51]
mixes can trigger a stealth migraine spiral.
[00:56]
What the science shows about how powders strain circulation, metabolism, and the liver.
[01:02]
And how natural doesn't always mean safe.
[01:07]
And what observations to watch in your body when trying new powders.
[01:12]
Stay with me till the end.
[01:14]
This is not an easy topic, but it's an increasingly important one.
[01:19]
By the time we're done, you'll have the clarity to make informed choices and the tools to
[01:25]
recognize whether a powder is truly supporting you or quietly working against you.
[01:33]
This territory is new.
[01:36]
And the reason why I want to address it is that we have seen firsthand how silently harmful
[01:44]
And I want, and I need to address it.
[01:47]
Some of our migraine heroes hit that fabulous, beautiful milestone, an entire month of feeling
[01:55]
And our team is cheering from the sidelines for them.
[01:59]
And then unexpectedly, they relapse.
[02:03]
And we analyzed why at Migraine Heroes, through the app and four brains working daily on
[02:08]
each profile, we have a lot of means to analyze why.
[02:11]
And the pattern that keeps showing up is the modern wave of powders, the adaptogens and
[02:17]
functional mushroom blends, but also the protein shakes that are reinstating chaos at a very
[02:25]
That is why I want to do this episode.
[02:27]
Not because it's easy, not because the science is actually there, but because it's important.
[02:32]
It's very important.
[02:34]
And so today what I'm going to do is I'm going to go east first and explain how these powders
[02:38]
are digested in the digestive tract, then connect those insights to modern science where
[02:43]
evidence exists, and finally ground it all in real life examples from our superheroes.
[02:50]
Because this space is evolving, the science is strong in some places and thin in others.
[02:56]
Where data exists, I'll share it,
[02:59]
where it doesn't, I'll weave over what we've learned from our community with the lens of
[03:04]
Eastern medicine to make sense of what the brain and body are telling us and translate
[03:08]
those insights into clear, practical guidance for the wider community.
[03:14]
So protein powders first appeared in the 50s, mainly marketed to bodybuilders and really
[03:20]
caught on through the 60s and the 70s.
[03:24]
By the 80s and 90s, the category exploded with whey protein, which made shakes more
[03:29]
accessible and appealing beyond hardcore fitness.
[03:33]
From there, powders for weight loss followed, with meat replacement shakes becoming a huge
[03:38]
trend in the 90s and the 2000s.
[03:41]
And more recently, we've seen the rise of adaptogen powders like ashwagandha, maca,
[03:46]
reishi, and functional mushroom blends catering to wellness, focus, and stress resilience.
[03:52]
And today, powders are everywhere.
[03:54]
Protein shakes, adaptogen blends, superfood mixes, and mushroom elixirs, they're part
[03:59]
of everyday wellness culture.
[04:02]
On the surface, they look like a dream, a packed goodness with a solution for every
[04:08]
single one of your problems.
[04:09]
They're convenient, they're natural, a shortcut to enhanced health.
[04:15]
But what is the actual impact on our bodies and brains?
[04:18]
Do they all act in similar ways?
[04:21]
How does the migraine brain really respond to them and evaluate them?
[04:26]
In the East, food is not judged only by its nutrients components.
[04:32]
It's understood by its temperature, texture, and energy.
[04:37]
In traditional Chinese medicine, powders weaken the stomach spleen, the vital energy of digestion
[04:42]
of foods and digestion of thoughts.
[04:45]
Without chewing and warming, food isn't fully recognized.
[04:50]
Instead, undigested matter turns into dampness, a heavy, sticky residue that clogs channels.
[04:59]
This is a big, very big deal.
[05:02]
Because dampness is going to burden the liver, forcing energy upward instead of flowing smoothly.
[05:09]
That's when migraines bloom as heaviness in the head, sinus congestion, brain fog, and
[05:15]
throbbing pressure appear.
[05:17]
In addition to that, many of these powders contain potent kidney yang tonics and are
[05:23]
inherently dry in nature.
[05:26]
In traditional Chinese medicine term, this excess dryness and stimulation pushes kidney
[05:30]
yang upward, creating a sense of vitality, but at a cost.
[05:34]
It accelerates the depletion of liver balance and consumes heart yin.
[05:40]
The result is not deeper nourishment, but agitation, more excitability, irritability,
[05:45]
restlessness, and overactive thinking.
[05:48]
What looks like energy on the surface is often imbalanced underneath, with the body's cooling,
[05:54]
and restorative yin being steadily drained.
[05:57]
In traditional Chinese medicine, health depends on the balance of yin and yang, and even nourishing
[06:02]
substances can become harmful if taken in excess.
[06:08]
When nutrients are consumed in highly concentrated dense forms, such as powders, the body can
[06:14]
be flooded with more fuel than it truly needs or can use.
[06:18]
This surplus does not strengthen the system, instead it creates imbalance.
[06:24]
Too much density generates excess yang heat stimulation activity, while simultaneously
[06:31]
depleting yin, the cooling, moistening, restorative force that anchors the body.
[06:36]
What begins as nourishment can thus transform into strain, leaving the system vulnerable.
[06:43]
In this view, excess is not a sign of strength, but of weakness, because it undermines the
[06:49]
body's ability to maintain harmony.
[06:52]
This is something really hard to understand for the Western brain.
[06:58]
Potent is not potent.
[07:00]
Excess potency leads to weakness.
[07:03]
This is a concept I'm personally learning to grasp myself every day.
[07:07]
A couple of months ago, I got to experience this firsthand.
[07:10]
A dear friend of mine had opened her clinic, a gorgeous space created with the best of
[07:16]
She's also very well trained in her treatments, which I deeply respect and very skilled at
[07:22]
Alongside them, she was offering powders and blends that had carefully been sourced and
[07:26]
re-blended from the East.
[07:28]
One of them was for brain potency, called something like Brain Boost.
[07:31]
Wanting to support her, and because it looked delicious and so well sourced, I bought it.
[07:37]
For a few days, I added it into my routine.
[07:39]
And then, oh my god, my brain began racing so fast, I couldn't keep up with it.
[07:44]
On on-boarding calls, I could literally feel my thoughts running ahead of my words.
[07:48]
Outwardly, I could sort of dissimulate it, but inside, I was spinning.
[07:53]
I felt completely ungrounded.
[07:55]
I realized right away, this was increasing my kidney yang and depleting my heart yin.
[08:00]
It was just too much for me.
[08:04]
Later, I told the story to another friend, who said, but you know so much. I don't think
[08:08]
your friend practitioner understands this even.
[08:10]
And yes, it's since 2019, we've been walking side by side with people every single day,
[08:15]
and that accelerates the learning.
[08:18]
We've grown to a place where I can sometimes even correct books.
[08:22]
But that doesn't mean I'm immune. I'm still human.
[08:25]
Friendship and marketing still tempts me, especially when something feels comforting
[08:28]
and tastes amazing on a rainy day.
[08:31]
And that's exactly why this lesson felt so important.
[08:34]
No matter how much we know, we have to stay humble, to listen to our bodies, and respect
[08:38]
just how potent these natural powders can be.
[08:41]
In Ayurveda, powders dampen agni, the digestive fire.
[08:46]
Without that fire, food becomes ama, or toxic residue.
[08:50]
Ama spreads heaviness and confusion, an exact match for brain fog.
[08:54]
Powders aggravate vata, destabilizing the nervous system with restlessness and overthinking,
[09:00]
while provoking pitta, increasing heat and inflammation in the head.
[09:04]
The result, migraines that feel both chaotic and burning.
[09:08]
So exactly what I had been going through.
[09:11]
Now, if you combine that with medication and toxicity of the liver, this is just so much
[09:17]
for your body and your brain to take.
[09:19]
Now, what does the West say about this?
[09:23]
Well, from a biomedical perspective, powders, especially those packed with herbs, adaptogens,
[09:28]
or concentrated proteins, place an additional workload on the liver, the body's central
[09:33]
hub for detoxification and metabolism.
[09:36]
In individuals predisposed for migraines, that extra metabolic strain may act as a tipping
[09:42]
point, triggering or worsening attacks.
[09:45]
This isn't just theoretical.
[09:47]
Scientific reviews and hepatology reports estimate that multi-ingredient, nutrient supplements
[09:52]
are responsible for nearly 20% of supplement-related liver injuries in the US.
[09:59]
I'll repeat, responsible for nearly 20% of supplement-related liver injuries in the US.
[10:06]
Compounding the issue is the widespread marketing of such products as natural or plant-based,
[10:11]
which creates a sense of safety that isn't always justified.
[10:15]
A 2022 review in Journal of Herbal Medicine underscores that natural does not equal benign
[10:22]
These products can contain hidden contaminants, overstimulate detoxification pathways, or
[10:27]
provoke inflammatory responses, especially in vulnerable populations.
[10:32]
Taken together, Western science is beginning to validate what people experience.
[10:36]
Powders, while convenient and trendy, can stress key systems and in some cases increase
[10:42]
the risk of migraine destabilization.
[10:45]
And there's another cautionary tale.
[10:47]
Natural powders like butterbur are promoted for migraine prevention, while one purified
[10:52]
extract should benefit, many over-the-counter versions still contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids,
[10:59]
which are toxic to the liver.
[11:01]
And so the American Academy of Neurology withdrew its recommendation in 2015 over these safety
[11:08]
The story that really encouraged me to record this episode comes from three of our own migraine
[11:14]
One of them went for a full month completely migraine-free.
[11:17]
Another managed a couple of months.
[11:20]
And the third, a full year.
[11:22]
Incredible milestones after years of pain.
[11:24]
And then suddenly the migraines came back with vengeance.
[11:27]
And when we traced what had changed, one thing stood out.
[11:31]
Powders that were highly recommended by respected influencers, advice that worked beautifully
[11:36]
for some, but clearly not for everyone.
[11:39]
And so that's why I did this episode.
[11:41]
Now, science in this category is still evolving, and it's likely that it's going to take more
[11:45]
regulation in the future as awareness of risks grow.
[11:49]
But that being said, the response to powders will never be the same for everyone.
[11:52]
Individual genetics, metabolism, and underlying conditions mean that Western science may struggle
[11:58]
to connect all the dots and deliver one definitive answer.
[12:02]
The most reliable path then is to monitor closely what truly suits you, to pay attention
[12:07]
to how your body responds, and to let go of the noise and of the one-size-fits-all promises
[12:14]
So how do you know today in your home?
[12:17]
If you take a lot of medications still for migraines, do not add up potent powder.
[12:23]
This is just too much for your system to take, in particular your kidney and your liver.
[12:29]
If your bowel movements are not regular, so they're too dry or too loose, or a combination
[12:33]
of those, refrain from those as well.
[12:37]
If you have a tendency to overthink, to have your mind agitated, to be restless, to have
[12:42]
night sweats, to have evening migraines, and to have ovulation migraines, these powders
[12:47]
might not suit you at all.
[12:49]
The best approach is to keep a close eye on your brain and on your bowel movements.
[12:54]
They are the clear signals that your body gives you.
[12:58]
If everything stays regular and balanced, you can usually tolerate these powders.
[13:02]
But if things start to shift, fogginess, dizziness, constipation, looseness, irregularity, that's
[13:09]
a sign your gut-brain axis is being disturbed, and it's time to pause.
[13:15]
And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom.
[13:20]
You are powerful, you are resilient, and you are no longer alone.
[13:25]
Keep rising, migraine hero.
