Could that zero-calorie soda be triggering your migraine?

[00:04]

We take a dive into how aspartame might be affecting your head.

[00:12]

Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers who've seen countless doctors with

[00:18]

no results.

[00:20]

Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks without endless medications or constant sacrifices.

[00:26]

Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme.

[00:28]

I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine, even after suffering for up to 60

[00:34]

years.

[00:35]

My mission in life?

[00:36]

To bring this relief to a million people using a unique blend of Eastern medicine and Western

[00:42]

science.

[00:46]

In this episode, you will learn how Western science connects aspartame to migraine attacks.

[00:51]

The surprising way aspartame can trigger inflammation, brain excitability, and blood sugar disruption.

[00:59]

And how Eastern medicine interprets artificial sweeteners, from blocked chi to docic imbalance,

[01:06]

and why that matters for your migraines.

[01:09]

Let's talk about aspartame, the artificial sweetener found in over 6,000 foods and drink

[01:15]

products.

[01:16]

Aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar and has been FDA approved since the 70s.

[01:24]

But here's the thing, for some people with migraines, this little packet of sweetness

[01:28]

might be packing a hidden punch.

[01:32]

Back in 1987, a randomized double-blind crossover trial looked at people who believed certain

[01:39]

foods triggered their headaches.

[01:41]

When those individuals consumed aspartame, they had more headache days compared to when

[01:46]

they were given a placebo.

[01:48]

Then, in 1989, a survey of 171 people with chronic headache found that 8% reported aspartame

[01:57]

as a personal trigger.

[01:59]

And if they had migraines, they were three times more likely to react to it than people

[02:04]

with other types of headaches.

[02:06]

Even more telling, a controlled 13-week study focusing specifically on people with migraines

[02:12]

showed a clear pattern.

[02:14]

Aspartame led to more frequent headache days.

[02:18]

So while not everyone is affected, if you're living with migraines, it might be worth paying

[02:23]

attention to that sweetener label on your gum, yogurt, or diet drinks.

[02:29]

It might not be the food itself triggering your migraines, but what is in the food.

[02:35]

I lived in Boston for a couple of years while doing my MBA at Harvard.

[02:39]

At the time, I was on a tight budget, financing my studies through a scholarship and my own

[02:44]

modest savings.

[02:46]

My fiancé Laurent, now my husband, and I ate simply, mostly from big supermarkets and

[02:52]

definitely not organic.

[02:55]

And I can tell you, the number of food intolerances developed during that time was just heartbreaking.

[03:02]

Every time I ate something with corn syrup, my hands and feet would swell.

[03:08]

It was such a strange and frustrating reaction.

[03:11]

So if that's something you're experiencing, I really empathize.

[03:14]

Navigating food sensitivities in the US can be incredibly challenging and expensive.

[03:20]

And that's why at Migraine Heroes, we're always mindful of cost.

[03:24]

We recommend seasonal, patent, raw foods that support your health without breaking the bank.

[03:29]

Because eating well shouldn't be a luxury, especially when your brain is already doing

[03:33]

the hard work of healing.

[03:36]

So know that your choices matter and that you can make smart ones without breaking the bank.

[03:41]

So what's actually happening in your body when the aspartame triggers a migraine?

[03:48]

Aspartame breaks down into a few components, phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and a tiny amount

[03:56]

of methanol.

[03:57]

And while those might sound like harmless building blocks, they can affect your brain

[04:01]

chemistry.

[04:03]

Specifically, they may impact neurotransmitters and increase excitability in the nervous system,

[04:09]

something that's already heightened in people with migraine-prone brains.

[04:14]

But that's not all.

[04:16]

Aspartame may also trigger peripheral inflammation, meaning inflammation outside the brain, like

[04:23]

in your gut, in your muscles, or in your blood vessels.

[04:26]

That kind of inflammation sends distress signals through your nervous system straight to your

[04:32]

brain.

[04:33]

And for a brain that's already on high alert, it can be like adding fuel to the fire.

[04:37]

It activates key pain pathways, especially the trigeminovascular system, which is deeply

[04:42]

involved in migraine attacks.

[04:44]

So something that starts as a simple dietary irritant can quickly spiral into a full-blown

[04:50]

episode.

[04:51]

And let's not forget, aspartame's intense sweetness may also play a role.

[04:57]

For some people, that high sweetness level may disrupt blood-sugar balance and mess with

[05:03]

gut-brain signaling, both of which can help set off a migraine cascade.

[05:09]

Let me explain.

[05:11]

That intense sweetness can confuse your body.

[05:14]

For some people, just the taste of sweetness is enough to trigger a metabolic response.

[05:19]

Your brain senses sweetness and prepares for sugar, so insulin may get released.

[05:26]

Even though no real sugar is coming in.

[05:29]

And that mismatch can throw off your blood-sugar balance, leading to drops in glucose that

[05:34]

may leave you feeling shaky, foggy, or trigger a migraine, if migraine is sensitive to those

[05:40]

fluctuations.

[05:41]

At the same time, that artificial sweet sensation can interfere with your gut-brain signaling.

[05:47]

Your gut thinks food is coming, but there's nothing nourishing behind it, potentially

[05:52]

triggering stress responses or inflammation in people who are sensitive.

[05:56]

So it's not the sugar itself, it's the illusion of sugar that can sometimes throw

[06:01]

your system off.

[06:02]

If you know me well, you'll know I hold a very different view of migraines.

[06:06]

I truly believe that migraine is not a defect, it's a genetic, what is called, advantage,

[06:11]

even though it doesn't feel like it.

[06:13]

But think about it, 1 in 5 women has a genetic predisposition for migraine.

[06:18]

Do you really think that Mother Nature designed 20% of women to be dysfunctional for no reason?

[06:24]

Of course not.

[06:26]

Throughout history, these women were the ones who were more alert, more intuitive, more

[06:30]

attuned to changes in their environment, and that sensitivity helped them survive and reproduce

[06:35]

well.

[06:36]

They sensed danger earlier, they picked up on subtle shifts, they were wired for protection,

[06:41]

not for chaos.

[06:42]

And at Migraine Heroes, we don't see your brain as broken, we see it as brilliant, superior,

[06:47]

not erratic or weak.

[06:49]

And when you start first resetting, and then honoring that sensitivity, that's when the

[06:54]

magic happens.

[06:56]

Now, so what does Eastern medicine have to say about artificial sweeteners like aspartame?

[07:02]

For a change, let's start with Ayurveda.

[07:04]

From this ancient Indian perspective, artificial sweeteners are considered what is called tamasic,

[07:11]

meaning they carry a heavy, dulling energy.

[07:15]

Tamasic substances are thought to cloud the mind, slow the body, and disrupt your natural

[07:20]

balance.

[07:21]

Specifically, they can aggravate both the kapha and pitta doshas, so the more damp and

[07:27]

the more heat-fired doshas, two of the body's main energy types.

[07:32]

When kapha gets thrown off, you might feel sluggish, heavy, or mentally foggy.

[07:37]

And when pitta is disrupted, it can show up as inflammation, irritation, or you guessed

[07:42]

it, headaches and migraines.

[07:45]

For some prone to migraines, this imbalance can be a real trigger.

[07:49]

Now let's look at traditional Chinese medicine.

[07:52]

In this system, artificial sweeteners like aspartame are seen as creating heat and dampness

[07:57]

in the body.

[07:58]

That may sound abstract, but think of it like this.

[08:01]

Heat can cause inflammation and irritation, while dampness represents stagnation and heaviness.

[08:06]

And together, they can block the smooth flow of qi, your life force, especially the liver

[08:11]

and the spleen systems.

[08:13]

And in TCM, that liver-spleen network is closely tied to digestion, hormonal rhythm, emotional

[08:20]

regulation, and pain processing.

[08:23]

When the qi gets stuck, symptoms like headaches, digestive distress, and even migraine aura

[08:28]

can emerge.

[08:29]

So while Eastern traditions use a different language, they point to the same core idea.

[08:36]

Artificial sweeteners can disrupt the body's natural intelligence, and for a sensitive

[08:40]

system, that disruption can echo all the way into the brain.

[08:44]

So if there's one key takeaway here, it is trust your brain more than advertising.

[08:50]

Always, your body speaks a language deeper than any label or marketing claim.

[08:57]

If something doesn't feel right, if your head starts pounding or your gut clenches

[09:02]

after that sugar-free treat, believe your experience.

[09:07]

Your brain is wise, it's sensitive, and it always is trying to protect you.

[09:12]

Listen to it. It knows.

[09:15]

And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom.

[09:20]

You are powerful, you are resilient, and you are no longer alone.

[09:25]
