Chocolate, cheese, and wine: the holy trinity of migraine “triggers.” But what if they’re not villains, after all, but messengers from your body asking you to listen more closely?

In this episode of Migraine Heroes Podcast, host Diane Ducarme explores the real story behind these indulgences — and why your reactions to them may reveal more about your brain and gut health than about the foods themselves. We blend neuroscience, gut microbiome research, and Eastern medicine wisdom to uncover how pleasure and balance coexist — even in the migraine world.

You’ll discover: 🍷 Why chocolate, cheese, and wine aren’t always the triggers you think they are — and what the latest science really says 🧀 How your brain chemistry and gut bacteria might decide whether a glass of wine soothes you… or sparks chaos 🍫 How Traditional Chinese Medicine reframes indulgence — not as guilt, but as balance and harmony in your Qi

You’ll also learn: ✨ Why what feels like a “trigger” might actually be a signal of imbalance waiting to be restored ✨ How to bring back pleasure — mindfully — without fear of pain This episode will help you move beyond restriction and reconnect with your body’s intelligence — so every bite and sip can become an act of awareness, not anxiety.

What if your favorite indulgences, chocolate, cheese and wine, aren't villains after all,

[00:07]

but messengers from your brain? Let's decode what's really behind these classic migraine triggers.

[00:18]

Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers who've seen countless doctors with no

[00:24]

results. Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks without endless medications or constant sacrifices.

[00:32]

Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme. I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine, even after

[00:38]

suffering for up to 60 years. My mission in life? To bring this relief to a million people

[00:44]

using a unique blend of eastern medicine and western science.

[00:48]

In this episode, you will learn why chocolate, cheese and wine aren't always the triggers you think they are,

[00:58]

and what the latest science really says. How your brain chemistry and gut bacteria

[01:04]

might decide whether a glass of wine soothes you or sparks chaos. And how eastern medicine

[01:11]

reframes indulgence, not as guilt, but as balance. So stay with me till the end, because you'll leave

[01:18]

knowing which of these foods your body can actually befriend. Let's start with western view,

[01:24]

and a little confession. For decades, we've been told to fear certain foods. Skip the chocolate,

[01:29]

ditch the cheese, never drink wine. But new research says something fascinating. These foods

[01:35]

might not be causing migraines, they might be signaling them. A 2024 review in Nutrients explains

[01:42]

that food often blamed for migraine attacks may actually appear after the migraine process has

[01:47]

already started, during what neurologists call the premonitory phase, or the prodrome. In simple terms,

[01:55]

the craving comes before the pain. It's not the chocolate that's causing the migraine, it's your

[02:00]

migraine that is calling for the chocolate. Now let's look at these three culprits more closely.

[02:07]

Chocolate. It's rich in magnesium, theobromine, and serotonin precursors, all compounds your brain

[02:14]

actually needs for stability. A study in the Journal of Headache and Pain found no consistent

[02:20]

link between chocolate intake and migraine attacks. In fact, avoiding it out of fear may even increase

[02:26]

anxiety, one of the strongest known migraine triggers. By the way, I'm not saying I agree with

[02:33]

all of these. I'm presenting the latest science in this part of the podcast, and we'll see later

[02:38]

what I think. The second culprit is cheese. Here, the finger usually points at tyramine, a natural

[02:44]

byproduct of aging or fermentation. But tyramine isn't automatically bad. A 2023 study in Frontiers

[02:53]

in Nutrition showed that your gut microbiota, your unique bacterial fingerprint, determines how well

[02:59]

you break down compounds like tyramine and histamine. So it's not the cheese, it's your body's

[03:04]

ability to process it. And then there's wine. Ah, the most misunderstood of them all. Red wine contains

[03:12]

histamine, sulfides, and phenolic compounds, all of which interact with the enzyme diamine oxidase,

[03:20]

or DAO. When DAO levels run low, often due to stress, hormonal changes, or gas inflammation,

[03:27]

histamine builds up and headaches can appear. So rather than saying these foods cause migraine,

[03:34]

part of modern science is saying they interact with your system depending on your sleep, your

[03:39]

stress, your hormones, and your gut health. That's not guilt. That's data. Modern data. And once you

[03:46]

start listening to those signals instead of fearing them, you begin to build a map of your body's

[03:52]

real thresholds. But while western science gives us the chemistry, eastern medicine gives us

[03:58]

something a bit deeper, the story beneath the story. In traditional Chinese medicine, there's no such

[04:04]

thing as a bad food. There are only foods that are right or wrong for your balance currently. So let's

[04:13]

translate our three indulgences into the language of energy. Chocolate in traditional Chinese medicine

[04:20]

is sweet and slightly warming. It nourishes the heart and the spleen, lifting mood and energy.

[04:26]

But too much, especially during stress, creates internal dampness and heat, and that's the heavy

[04:31]

throbbing sensation that makes your head feel like it's under pressure. If it contains a good

[04:35]

amount of cacao, it may even benefit your kidney system but overload your liver. Cheese is rich

[04:42]

and phlegm-forming. If your digestion is strong, if your spleen chi is thriving, a small amount nourishes

[04:50]

and stabilizes you. But when your system is tired or cold, cheese creates congestion, physical and

[04:56]

emotional. You feel heavy, foggy and stuck. Wine, on the other hand, is considered a blood mover.

[05:03]

In moderation, it is medicine. It warms, it relaxes, it circulates. But if your liver chi is already

[05:10]

rising, if stress, anger or hormones have you running hot, then wine is going to act like wind

[05:16]

on fire. The result? Pulsing temples and the kind of headache that feels like pressure pushing upward.

[05:22]

The result? Pulsing temples and a kind of headache that feels like pressure pushing upward.

[05:27]

They can rise from your neck all the way to your temples and even top of the head. In Ayurveda,

[05:34]

it would be called a Pitta-Vata imbalance. Too much heat, too much movement. These foods

[05:40]

are going to amplify both. In the East, these foods are not your enemies, they are your teachers.

[05:46]

If chocolate calls to you, maybe your body is craving sweetness, magnesium or warmth or just

[05:52]

blood. If cheese comforts you, perhaps your yin, your nourishing cooling essence is depleted.

[05:59]

If wine helps you finally relax, your liver might be whispering you're already doing too much.

[06:06]

The Eastern prescription is gentle, never rigid. You need to enjoy chocolate after a grounding meal,

[06:12]

never on an empty stomach. You need to pair cheese not with wine but with warm cooked vegetables to

[06:18]

keep the chi moving. And you need to drink the wine slowly with food, never when you're tired, anxious

[06:25]

or dehydrated. So instead of cutting out the joy, we learn to digest it. Because health is not about

[06:31]

deprivation, it's about harmony. And when you restore balance, even with the foods you once feared,

[06:37]

they can become allies again. Now, most people we work with are saints, absolute saints.

[06:44]

You can discover our work on migraineheroes.com and in our approach, we help people identify their

[06:49]

triggers. We list them because sometimes they're not completely aware of all of them. But it doesn't

[06:54]

mean that they can never have them again. In fact, our experience shows that in modest amounts,

[06:59]

certain amounts, your body can often learn to cope with them and cope with these naughty things.

[07:05]

It's a bit like having a key employee who's struggling with their workload. You can either

[07:10]

reduce your responsibilities or give them the right training and resources so they can rise to

[07:15]

the challenge. I'll never forget a woman in Canada. She was a vet and she took two days off. She treated

[07:23]

herself to a cocktail and she said to her husband, I tell you, I'm, you know, get ready. I'm going to be

[07:28]

bedridden for two days. And for the first time in years, she didn't get a migraine. So keep your hope

[07:34]

up. You will find your way back, not just surviving, but also truly living. That is why this podcast

[07:41]

exists. And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom. You are powerful,

[07:49]

you are resilient, and you are no longer alone. Keep rising, Migraine Hero.
