When your gut heats up and your brain starts to ache, it’s not random — it’s a message. A flare-up in your gut can echo upward, shifting your brain chemistry, amplifying inflammation, and lowering your migraine threshold.

In this episode of Migraine Heroes Podcast, host Diane Ducarme connects the dots between digestive distress and neurological pain, helping you understand why gut trouble so often becomes head trouble.

You’ll discover: 🔥 How gut inflammation changes the brain — from neuroinflammation to altered neurotransmitters 🔥 Why the stress–gut–brain loop keeps symptoms cycling — and how permeability, cortisol, and inflammation feed each other 🔥 How Eastern medicine explains a “hot” or “inflamed” gut — and why cooling, calming, and restoring flow can quiet the mind 🔥 Practical ways to soothe the gut so the brain can finally settle — using food, routines, and simple nervous-system resets

This episode blends neuroscience with holistic medicine to help you recognize when your gut is speaking — and how to respond before the pain reaches your brain.

When your gut flares up and your brain becomes in pain, that's not just a bad day, it's

[00:05]

your body's warning system, and it's time we started listening.

[00:12]

Welcome to Migraine Heroes, a podcast for people living with chronic migraines with

[00:17]

years of pain, misunderstanding, and lack of answers.

[00:21]

I'm Diane Ducarne, I've helped more than a thousand people reduce the burden of migraines

[00:26]

and feel more in control.

[00:28]

My mission in life?

[00:30]

To help a million people.

[00:32]

Each episode brings you grounded insight into what your body might be asking for, and what

[00:37]

can truly help.

[00:40]

Just to keep you fully supported, this podcast is educational.

[00:44]

For diagnosis or medication, always work with your doctor.

[00:49]

Now take a breath, and let's dive in.

[00:57]

In this episode, you'll learn how inflammation in the gut can trigger neurological changes

[01:01]

that lead to migraines and brain fog, why stress, diet, and gut permeability form a

[01:08]

two-way feedback loop that amplifies pain and fatigue, and how both Western and Eastern

[01:13]

medicine view cooling the gut as a path to calming the mind.

[01:18]

Stay with me till the end, because once you see how your gut and brain share one inflammatory

[01:22]

language, the connection between the two will finally make sense.

[01:27]

Now, here's the thing. The gut isn't just a digestive organ. It's an immune powerhouse.

[01:33]

Over 70% of your immune cells live along its lining, constantly deciding what's safe and

[01:38]

what's not.

[01:39]

When that lining is strong, it filters wisely.

[01:42]

But when stress from processed foods, infection, antibodies, or emotional overload, the barrier

[01:47]

weakens.

[01:48]

That's when microscopic particles leak into the bloodstream, and the immune system sounds

[01:54]

the alarm.

[01:55]

Cytokines, tiny inflammatory messengers, rise.

[01:58]

They travel through your blood, they cross the blood-brain barrier, and change how neurons

[02:04]

fire.

[02:05]

Your brain hears the body's distress call. It reacts with fatigue, mood swings, and in

[02:10]

many people, migraines.

[02:13]

There was this study done in 2022 in Nature's Communication that found that inflammatory

[02:19]

markers from the gut could activate pain pathways in the brain's meninges, the same

[02:25]

areas involved in migraine attacks.

[02:27]

In other words, your head pain may actually be your immune system's echo.

[02:33]

Researchers also found that migraine patients often have gastrointestinal disorder.

[02:37]

I see that every day in my work as well, like irritable bowel syndrome, what is called IBS.

[02:43]

Some have leaky gut, very loose stool all the time, celiac disease, sometimes things

[02:48]

quite sophisticated, like a helicobacter pylori infection, sometimes just an alternance of

[02:55]

really dry and really wet bowel movements, indicating the gut-brain axis at work, and

[03:01]

is overall grumpy.

[03:03]

Now here's the paradox.

[03:05]

The brain can send signals back too.

[03:08]

So in that same way, chronic stress activates the vagus nerve in reverse, tightening digestion,

[03:15]

reducing blood flow to the gut, and worsening inflammation.

[03:18]

And so the loop feeds itself.

[03:20]

It's a two-way street.

[03:22]

The gut and brain become mirrors, one's tensions reflected in the other's pain.

[03:27]

Healing this cycle isn't about a single supplement.

[03:30]

It's about reducing the noise in the system, calming the firearm, so both organs can breathe

[03:35]

again.

[03:36]

Now in the Magnet Heroes app, that's what we do every single day.

[03:41]

We track how your brain is, but we also track how your bowel movement is, the nature of

[03:46]

your stool, its shape, against the Bristol chart, which is the official medical chart

[03:53]

of different stools, so that we can get to the perfect bowel movement.

[03:58]

And as we correct it, we know through foods that then the gut-brain axis becomes a lot

[04:03]

happier.

[04:04]

Now sometimes there's a lot more to correct beyond, however, that always needs to be really

[04:10]

well anchored.

[04:12]

In traditional Chinese medicine, the slope between gut and brain is known for long before

[04:16]

we had even microscope or neurotransmitters.

[04:19]

When the center, your digestive core, becomes overheated or stagnant, that excess energy

[04:24]

travels upward, cooling the head, agitating the mind, and tightening the temples.

[04:30]

You don't need to know the names of the organs to feel them.

[04:34]

It's just that restless energy that builds when you overthink, or the rushed meals, or

[04:38]

ignore your body's needs to pose.

[04:41]

The inner rhythm breaks, the gut loses its calm, and the mind follows.

[04:46]

Healing begins with cooling, not in temperature, but in pace.

[04:50]

Eating slowly, favoring simple foods that are warm, but not heavy, letting your breath

[04:54]

catch up with your body.

[04:56]

Drinking enough water, avoiding extremes, too spicy, too cold, too fast.

[05:01]

These are simple acts of self-regulation, disguised as daily habits.

[05:05]

Eastern medicine teaches that the gut is your earth, your ground of stability.

[05:10]

When it overheats, the wind of the mind cannot rest.

[05:13]

But when the center cools and softens, clarity returns, naturally, without force.

[05:18]

You don't need to silence the roar,

[05:20]

you can just give it somewhere to land.

[05:23]

So, if your migraines, fatigue, or brain fog seem to rise from nowhere, look lower.

[05:29]

Your gut may be speaking in the only language it knows, inflammation.

[05:34]

The goal isn't to chase or to mute the symptoms of your migraine,

[05:38]

it's to listen earlier, deeper, and with curiosity.

[05:42]

Each small change, one mindful mean, one calm breath, one pause before you react, cools

[05:47]

the system just a little more.

[05:49]

Now, I also want to acknowledge that some people who will listen to this podcast will

[05:54]

say, ah, that's not me, I'm a saint, and there are saints among you, people who do

[05:58]

not drink wine, they don't have cheese, they don't indulge in chocolate, they have regular

[06:03]

meals, they meditate, they do yoga, they have a beautiful glow in all aspects of their life,

[06:09]

but of their migraines.

[06:11]

And I want to acknowledge these people, because it's really important,

[06:14]

sometimes the gut-brain axis isn't faulty,

[06:17]

something else is happening.

[06:18]

Now, if this is you, I want to encourage you, you can go on MigraineHeroes.com, and in the

[06:23]

podcast section, you can search a podcast about migraine and other symptoms that are

[06:29]

occurring inside of your body,

[06:30]

so you can find the podcast that suits you, that answers your question, your body.

[06:35]

We do 104 a year, and we're committed to translating them into French and Spanish to make them

[06:41]

more available.

[06:42]

We want you to have answers.

[06:45]

And remember, every small step you take moves you closer to freedom.

[06:50]

You are powerful, you are resilient, and you are no longer alone.

[06:55]

Keep rising, Migraine Hero.
