Ever had a migraine that seemed to strike out of nowhere — and later noticed your digestion had been off, your appetite weird, or your belly unusually tight? It’s not random. It’s a conversation. Because your gut and your brain are constantly talking, and when that dialogue breaks down, migraine often steps in.

In this episode of Migraine Heroes Podcast, host Diane Ducarme unpacks the hidden ways your microbiome shapes inflammation, mood, sensitivity, and migraine pain. With a blend of neuroscience, real-world data, and Eastern medicine wisdom, we decode what your gut has been trying to tell you long before the migraine hits.

You’ll discover: 💡 How the gut–brain axis controls inflammation, stress chemistry, and pain sensitivity 💡 Why microbiome imbalances can amplify reactions to food, hormones, and daily stress 💡 What Western research and Eastern medicine both say about restoring digestive balance 💡 How small shifts in digestion can predict — and prevent — future attacks

If your migraines feel mysterious, inconsistent, or tied to your digestion in ways you can’t fully explain — this episode will finally make the invisible visible.

Ever had a migraine that seemed to come out of nowhere and then realize your digestion had been off for days?

[00:07]

It's not a coincidence. It's a conversation because your brain and your guts have been talking all along

[00:15]

Migraine Heroes is a podcast for chronic migraine sufferers who've seen countless doctors with no results

[00:23]

Learn how to reduce your migraine attacks without endless medications or constant sacrifices

[00:29]

Hello, I'm Diane Ducarme. I've helped over 500 people break free from migraine even after suffering for up to 60 years

[00:38]

My mission in life? To bring this relief to a million people using a unique blend of Eastern medicine and Western science

[00:49]

In this episode you will learn how the gut pain connection shapes inflammation, mood and migraine pain

[00:55]

Why imbalances in the microbiome can amplify sensitivity to food, stress and hormones

[01:01]

And how both Western science and Eastern medicine translate this invisible dialogue into practical ways to restore balance

[01:09]

Stay with me till the end because when you learn your gut and brain are constantly in conversation

[01:14]

The way you see your migraines will most probably change

[01:19]

Inside your intestines live trillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi

[01:24]

All of them forming your microbiome

[01:27]

And together they form a living ecosystem that produces neurotransmitters

[01:32]

trains your immune system and constantly chats with your brain through the vagus nerve and the bloodstream

[01:38]

And when the microbiome is diverse and balanced, it keeps inflammation low, serotonin steady and the brain calm

[01:46]

But when that ecosystem tilts from antibiotics, stress, processed food or lack of sleep Its messages change tone

[01:57]

The gut is going to start sending distress signals, inflammatory molecules, immune activators and alerted neurotransmitters

[02:04]

And the brain, wired to listen, is going to respond with pain, anxiety, fatigue or migraine

[02:12]

A 2023 review in the Journal of Neuroinflammation found that migraine patients often have a distinct microbiome signature

[02:19]

Fewer anti-inflammatory species like lactobacillus and bifidobacterium

[02:25]

And more bacteria that release nitric oxide, a molecule known to dilate blood vessels and trigger headaches

[02:32]

Other studies show that certain gut microbes can metabolize food into compounds that affect serotonin

[02:39]

90% of which is produced in the gut

[02:41]

So when your microbiome shifts, your brain chemistry shifts too

[02:46]

As a result, migraine may not just happen in the head,

[02:50]

they may start a static in the gut conversation line

[02:54]

In traditional Chinese medicine, the gut isn't a passive organ

[02:57]

It's your center, the source of nourishment and stability for your whole system, including your brain

[03:02]

When the center is strong, energy moves smoothly and the mind feels grounded

[03:07]

And when it's weak or overstimulated, the upper body feels with tension and the head becomes heavy

[03:13]

The classic pattern of migraine rising

[03:16]

Eastern medicine prescribes this as the middle of the body losing harmony with the upper

[03:22]

Too much thinking, too much rushing, too much cold or erratic eating pulls the energy upward

[03:28]

Leaving the core empty and the head overloaded

[03:32]

Healing begins not with restriction, but with rhythm

[03:35]

More meals, mindful chewing, eating without screens, breathing between bites

[03:41]

There's also one advice I give people

[03:43]

I remind them that we're animals and just like a dog or a cat would smell their food before they eat it

[03:49]

Just inspect it

[03:50]

I would really encourage you to do the same

[03:53]

And the reason why is that sometimes you can have what is called a stomach bug migraine

[03:58]

If you're eating slightly mindlessly, you can take something from the fridge

[04:01]

It's actually slightly rotten, but not enough that you would really, really smell it or feel it or sense it or taste it

[04:08]

But if you were paying attention, you'd feel it slightly sparkly or slightly acidic

[04:13]

or the taste is just slightly off

[04:16]

And if you're mindlessly eating it, you would only notice that once it's in your stomach

[04:22]

And then you're about to vomit through up, you know, in a very violent form and have a massive migraine with it

[04:27]

That will not allow you to keep any medication in

[04:30]

And that's really a stomach bug migraine

[04:32]

Then you're going to have sort of a very loose stool

[04:35]

Your body has a knee-jerk reaction, a really strong reaction,

[04:38]

which by the way is completely warranted Okay

[04:41]

the absence of which can lead to a leaky gut for years, antibiotic for years

[04:45]

and then irritable bowel syndrome and A lot of complications when it comes to digestion.

[04:50]

So your body isn't overreacting It's actually protecting you

[04:54]

But a way to avoid that, which is very very simple, is you just smell your food

[04:59]

If it doesn't feel right, pass it on to your neighbor.

[05:01]

They'll have a bit of diarrhea Okay,

[05:03]

not a whole three days of migraine.

[05:06]

If you think about your agenda, think do I have three days to miss?

[05:09]

If the answer is no, then just don't eat that food that just doesn't feel completely right.

[05:15]

Now each simple act Strengthens your center and teaches the rest of your body to relax around it.

[05:22]

From this view, the microbiome is not just bacteria

[05:25]

It's a physical expression of your internal terrain.

[05:28]

When you treat it with warmth and kindness and consistency

[05:31]

Your whole system hears the message. We're safe again.

[05:35]

And when the center feels safe, the head no longer needs to shout through pain

[05:40]

So if your migraines seem to follow your stomach,

[05:42]

if stress, bloating or skipped meals light the fuse, listen closer

[05:47]

Your body may not be malfunctioning. It's speaking.

[05:50]

Feed your biome the way you'd feed a friendship

[05:53]

Regularly, gently, with respect.

[05:56]

You'll see that when the gut and the brain speak the same language again

[06:00]

The noise quiets, clarity returns

[06:03]

and the signal that once screamed pain becomes a whisper of peace Instead.

[06:08]

And so in that same vein, I want to share the story of a woman in New Zealand

[06:13]

who had a lot of dizziness and we corrected that dizziness. It was fabulous.

[06:16]

And in her completion call I gave her my personal whatsapp number

[06:19]

and I said look anything that happens You can just text me

[06:22]

which she did I think 18 months later

[06:24]

And she was in panic and she says I have this massive migraine

[06:27]

and I keep on throwing up and no medication

[06:30]

I can keep no medication They don't stay inside of me

[06:33]

because I puke all day long

[06:35]

and I asked her how are her stools what she ate before

[06:38]

and I said to her look really don't worry about it. It's just a stomach bug migraine.

[06:41]

No need to try to keep things in

[06:43]

I recommended a few foods that would suit her

[06:46]

and I said to her it's just gonna go away and it went away

[06:49]

and she hasn't Ever contacted me since which I knew she would

[06:52]

if something was coming up

[06:54]

So they are really impressive these stomach bug migraines.

[06:57]

They really manifest acutely Sometimes when the bacteria is off

[07:01]

there's other forms of migraines as well really different kind This is

[07:04]

just about listening to your gut brain axis

[07:07]
